What have I learned?
Using design software
such as Photoshop, illustrator and indesign. Of which I have applied to every
aspect of my work. As you can see on screen.
Other more practical
things I’ve learned are screen-print, letterpress, woodblock printing and laser
cutting.
Additional techniqual
aspects of Graphic Design I have learned are colour theory and how and when to
use typography. Learning these parts of Graphic Design has helped me to improve
the quality of my designs. Colour theory has allowed me to select colours that
work best together and made me think about colour in a completely different
light. I have also learned that typography is fundamental in producing a strong
design. But these are both extremely large subjects that I have only just
touched on and hope to enhance my knowledge of more.
What do I want to learn?
•
Packaging
I have produced some projects that have interesting types of packaging,
but I want to start using different stock and have a design at the end that has
a cleaner crisper finish. Which I am yet to do with my packaging, as shown with
the 2 I have created so far on the course.
•
Editorial and publishing
After the sessions with Phil I became really interested in the forming
of a page, the layout and structure, i learned a lot within these sessions and
applied grids and layouts to a lot of my work, and it became one of my strengths.
As shown with the animal layout, brief history book and the 10 things book. But
I feel there is still much more to learn with editorial and publishing and so
would like to start experimenting with grids for magazines, books, leaflets etc.
·
Brand and identity
Brand and identity is something I feel I have touched on, in the group
tea brief, where by we set up a company and created the ‘brand’ and ‘identity’. I enjoyed going about
creating something that spanned across different media, print, screen, video,
throughout containing the same visuals and colours. This way of working id like
to try and do again, maybe not creating a whole new brand but working with
existing brands.
What mistakes have i made
and how have i learned from them?
Some mistakes Ive made
have been:
Bad time management, whereby I have rushed the night before a
deadline, this has then had an impact on my work and that rushing comes across
in my final outcome.
From this I have learned
that being organised is extremely important, it will then allow me to
experiment more with my work, which in turn gives me a bigger range of work to
look at and choose from. Some ways in which I have learned to deal with this
are to keep a diary, so deadlines are noted and clear, also setting my own
deadlines gives me something to aim for each week, or each day. Also starting a brief as soon as I get it
will help me too keep organised and gets the initial fazes of a brief out the
way.
Another mistake ive made
is not blogging as i go. Time
management again would help this, but on this course keeping up with blogging
is essential because it slows you down in other areas if your not up to date
and it forms the fundamentals for reflection and evaluation of my own work.
From this I have learned
that if I blog straight away it will leave time for me to focus on my work in
hand and give me time for reflection.
A mistake I have also
made is not going into enough research
for a project, research helps form the essentials of a design and is extremely
important, it provides me with information and data to create a design and it
can help to change a design. The more research done the better informed I am on
the subject matter and what can be done.
I have learned that I
have to research a lot more for both primary and secondary resources; this will
help me to produce a better more informed design.
What are my strengths and
how will i develop them further?
Some strengths I feel I
have gained are layout/grids, also
composition, shown through the infographic for the tea project and the layouts
for the ‘10 things you need to know about Graphic Design’ brief.
To develop these I will
start experimenting with grids and different layouts and looking at different
magazines and books to get a greater grasp of how they are put together and see
if I can apply them to my own work.
Also doing more research
into grids and layouts will help inform me on whats going on in the
professional world and whats trending in editorial and publishing design.
Another strength I feel
I have is colour theory, whereby
learning Ittens seven colour contrast has allowed me to apply them to my own
work, shown with the speaking form experience brief.
To develop this further
I will again do more research, especially in colour theory whereby I can still
go into greater depth with it, helping me develop my knowledge of colour. Also
just simply always using colour will give me a better understanding of what
colours are out there and what can be done with them.
What have you enjoyed and
why?
One thing I did enjoy this year was the group tea project, this is because I dressed up as a cup of coffee
and pranced around Leeds Uni, something I never thought id do, and in the end
the outcome, although maybe not enjoyable at the time it was enjoyable when I
looked back upon it. It also did its intended job to make people laugh.
Another thing I have enjoyed was using the different equipment the
college has to offer, such as the laser
cutter. I enjoyed this because id never used one before and the amount of
detail that it can reproduce was amazing, it also left a rustic look to my work
that helped give it some character.
What have i disliked and
why?
Accept for the obvious, getting up early, the large amount of work and
the lack of a social life. I have disliked the shorter one week briefs, this is because I feel I cant get into a
project and im rushed near to the end of the brief so my work is effected.
Saying that if I was more thorough when it came to time management and blogging
I may find them more enjoyable.
AND FINALLY
What did I want to get
from the year?
A few things from the
start of the years PPP session.
·
To have the confidence to present
to a large group of people
It’s a working progress.
- To learn different methods of working
I feel I have achieved this, because I
have learnt a number of different software, Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign. I
have also learnt how to use a letterpress, screenprint and laser cuttering
machines.
- Better communication skills
I feel through the many crits I have
had that when communicating my work it has become better than on foundation but
there is still a vast room for improvement.
- Learning how to use different computer software in greater depth
There has been a massive improvement in
using the design software, because on foundation I was only partially
introduced to illustrator and nothing else, I have now become capable of
producing work on all 3. There is however still room for improvement seeing as
they are all very big programs where a lot can be done on them.
- To broaden my knowledge of graphic design
Here I have defiantly
learnt a lot, I came onto the course not really knowing truly what Graphic
Design is, i have found out there is a number of different branches off Graphic
Design that can be delved into and its not just about pretty posters.
What have i discovered
that I wasn’t expecting?
·
That im
maybe more confident than I first thought.
·
I can use
the design software
·
There is so
many different aspects of Graphic Design
The Actual Presentation
