Presentation 3

Review of the 3 years

Final Presentation

Notes

What have I learned

Year 1

I learned what graphic design actually is, how it isn’t just about making posters and CDs, there is A LOT more to it.

What actually looks aesthetically pleasing, this tin turn made my work become better, with a clear improvement even from the start of the year till the end of year 1.

How during colour theory I could understand how colour worked and how different colours work together, I think this made me appreciate colour more.

From the sessions on girds in Design Principles it was where my first interest in editorial design came from.  It made me think a lot more about how books are put together and the amount of work that goes into them.

Year 2

Working with clients and communication skills improved, something that is important for the professional industry

Working on completion briefs, this helped my time management because I had deadlines to meet, that if I didn’t meet then it would all be down to me and nobody else would care. I think this gave it an added pressure. Also the fact there is a possibility of winning something which you never get with other deadlines.

How collaboration is a key part when it comes to designing, as in the industry you’ll never be designing alone.

I improved my craft skills, I learnt a number of craft skils especially from the Pica Pizza Brief

Time management, organisation, because responsive was so stressful I had to be organised  to get a lot of briefs done for one period.

Pica Pizza

This brief was where my interest first came for branding, I really enjoyed the way I could create this whole brand from scratch and create everything to go with the brand, all the collateral.

Bare Munch

Dealing with a client, who not only asked for something very strange but also gave me 1 day to create it. This was one of my first interactions with a client and it straight away made me realise that working with clients isn’t going to be straight forward.

Year 3

Working with professionals in the industry, how in industry is completely different to the university life and how worked is produced, how we don’t have to blog everything we do, how if you mess up a project its for a client and on a lot of occasions for a lot of money.

From the DBA Brief I was able to have contact with industry professionals, who gave honest feedback. They made me realise that having a strong concept helped to produce a much better outcome.

In this year I have really been able to present my work in a much stronger way, through the use of photography in a studio my work looks better and is presented in a much more professional way.

This year my interest in sustainability has grown even more from the previous year due to the essay I wrote, from the research it made me more aware of sustainable issues and how we have a duty to do something. Also taking part in the sustainable social group and having something other then graphic design to do has helped me to increase my interest outside of design even more so.

DBA

This brief gave me the opportunity to speak to professionals and get feedback on work that they had set, hearing from people who are in the industry is valuable because they are at a place where we all aspire to be.

I think we produced a strong outcome  that the people of DBA really liked and thought we had something that was clearly well thought out and was going in the right direction I just need a little extra something.

Intern Magezine

After having a day with Alec Dudson from intern and hearing about his magazine and looking at all the examples he brought in it enhanced my interest in editorial from when we did the session on grids a year before, I think I really enjoy the feel of a book and the range of stocks that can be used, also strangely I like the smell of books. But this project we produced a strong concept for a magazine and was a project I really enjoyed.

Whistles

This brief I produced a new scent for whistles which I think the concept behind is strong but it was rushed so its something I am going to go back to and make stronger for my portfolio.

Conscious creative

Because of my interest in sustainability I have been going to the meetings of the sustainable group in the university, they asked me to create a logo and this is what I made. I think this project is slightly geared more towards PPP because although I have done some design work for them the group has enhanced my interest in sustainability outside of design.

Other interests outside of design

Throughout the 3 years I have become a lot more interested in food, having to cook for myself. This has made me want to travel and experience other cultures and experience there food.

Another interest I have is football, this has carried on form way before university and I enjoy doing something that isn’t design and is a good release of energy and stress. It also made me realise that graphic design will sadly never come ahead of football or dogs for that matter.

After uni

After university I plan to get a job at a studio somewhere hopefully and make some money before I can go travelling. Then I will move out and find another job.

Evaluation

I think doing this presentation was good because it gave us a chance to see where we had come from and how far we had improved from the start of the 3 years. It is personally very interesting to see how much my work has improved aesthetically, not only this but how much i have improved in creating a concept, which i feel in turn has helped me improve the aesthetic of my work, i don't just look at a brief for its face value anymore, i have realised that so much more goes into the making of a piece of design work and that there are so many areas of design, some of which i have become a lot more interested in throughout the 3 years. PPP has helped me to engage with professionals and enhance my own professional practice, this is through constant talks about how important it is to network and engage with what is a very busy popular sector of work. Growing my own practice is something that helps to get my name out there and me known and that is something this module has helped me to do and the importance of doing this. The module has opened my eyes to other designers and from this it has influenced my own work. One thing i have become a lot more interested in is sustainability, this has influenced me a lot and effected a lot of my briefs and areas of design i look at. Not only this but out of design this module has thought me that i should although appreciate design and have it at the forefront of my thoughts, i should also appreciate other things and hobbies in my life, this will then again have a good baring on my work.
