What is Graphic Design For? Part 1

'Graphic Design is the most universal of all the arts. It is all around us, explaining, decorating, identifying: imposing meaning on the world. It is in the streets, everything we read, it is on our bodies. We engage with design in road signs advertisements, magazines, cigarette packets, headache pills, the logo on our shirt, the washing label on our jacket.
Graphic Design performs a number of functions. It sorts and differentiates, it distinguishes one company or organisation or nation from another. It informs, it tells us how to bone a duck or how to register a birth. It acts on our emotions, and helps to shape how we feel about the world around us.'
('WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN?' Quentin Newark)

'Graphic Design is a creative visual arts discipline that encompasses many areas. It may include art direction, typography, page layout, information technology and other creative aspects. This variety means that there is a fragmented landscape for design practice within which designers may specialise and focus.'

Defining Information and Wayfinding

Information and wayfinding is a method of design where by boring information and data is displayed in a visually interesting way, this would then get people more interested in the information, where if it was just a list on some paper the audience may not look at it. This information can be displayed as a print or on screen as a interactive display

'Design plays an important role in the effective communication of information. As we have seen design can communicate very specific information in very specific ways, and this ability can be classified as information design. Information design encompasses design strategies that are geared to the dissemination of precise information for a particular end.'

Defining Product and Packaging

Product and packaging is a way of holding a item that keeps it safe or displays the product in an interesting way, it may be a product that is boring but then the packaging will bring it to life. It can also be a clever method of opening or closing. The packaging can also hold information to help inform the audience about the product.

'Packaging is storytelling in a compressed area, like a posters in miniature. Packs must mark out and differentiate the product from competitors, which they attempt in the most demanding of circumstances, often sitting next to direct competitors, on shelves brimming with distractions.'
('WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN?' Quentin Newark)

'Packaging is a substrate that includes a printed communication, which also performs other functions such as holding and protecting its contents from damage, changes in temperature or light. Packaging design is a specialist area that spans marketing, the use of town and three dimensional spaces, and the placement of the item in the sales environment.'

Defining Branding and Identity

Branding is the overall corporate image of the company or businesses, it forms the whole picture. A ‘brand’ is an organisation, service or product with a ‘personality’ that is shaped by the perceptions of the audience. In most cases, identity design is based around the visual devices used within a company, usually assembled within a set of guidelines.

'People tend to use the terms 'identity' and 'branding' interchangeably, but they refer to two different concepts. An identity is the sum of the qualities that are synonymous with the level of service of an organisation. Branding is the process by which this identity is given a visual expression.'
('The Fundamentals of Graphic Design' Gavin Ambrose + Paul Harris)

'The logo is only part of an organisations identity. It is no more than the moniker, a label, or a emblem, like a name is only a part of an individual's personality. What has come to be known as the 'corporate identity' covers how the logo is used, as well as all the other elements: tone of language, typefaces, colours, paperstocks, pictures, publication formats, signs, and so on.'

Defining Retail and Promotion

Retail is The sale of goods to the public for use or consumption rather than for resale.
Generally, promotion is communicating with the public in an attempt to influence them toward buying your products and/or services. Promotion, as a general term, includes all the ways available to make a product and/or service known to and purchased by customers and clients. The word promotion is also used specifically to refer to a particular activity that is intended to promote the business, product or service. A store might advertise that it's having a big promotion on certain items, for instance, or a business person may refer to an ad as a promotion.

'Consumerism, the demand for a wider range of goods results in fierce competition between manufactures and like products. Consumersim impacts on Graphic Design because product packaging and advertisements have an increasingly narrow and restricted window of opportunity to connect with the consumer.'
