For this group crit we were put into groups of about 12 people, we firstly as a group selected out of everyone's 10 final letterforms there best 5. These were then displayed on the wall along with the word they had chosen.
After displaying are work on the walls (above) we then switched groups to have a look at another groups set of work. With this set of work displayed on the wall we had a discussion as a group to which ones we felt had worked well in conjunction with the word they had chosen. Whilst doing this we removed letterforms that we thought didn't work till we were left with a final 5. Are group had narrowed it down to the 5 we thought not only had a strong visual quality but also actually resembled the word given, which was the main focus of this project.
After this we had to choose the one we all thought was the best at communicating the word given.
I feel this process is good because its interesting to see what other people thought was good work and what what was not good work, its also a fast process in helping the person who's work it is to see whats worked well and what hasn't, or in some cases if anything at all has worked. Another positive of this process is there is a lot of opinions being given out, which i suppose can also be a negative ( too overwhelming ). A negative again is that because of all the different opinions people may have pulled off the wall letterforms someone else may have thought worked well. An example of this is that the final letterform left on the wall in our group wasn't my favourite, this though was bound to happen because of the size of the group. I think within our group we had some good discussions that helped to narrow the letterforms down quickly, but when it came down to selecting the final image more of a discussion would have helped to get everyones input to what should have been chosen.
Evaluation
When approaching this brief i firstly thought of different media where i could hand render the letterforms, such as tracing paper, acetate and duplicate paper. I also considered objects i thought i could incorporate into letterforms that already contained layers, onions, cakes, rows of books, earths layers ect. I also researched designers who had used layering in some of there work and how i might try and use that.
I feel that using different typefaces and layering them with tracing paper worked well and provided some strong visual images, also when i repeated a letter moving it very slightly to the right or left it created a letter that resembled the word layer well and provided me with my strongest letters at the end. My work had a very geometric look and were clean and crisp which i think worked well because this made it easier to create a letter that resembles layer. What didn't work was sometimes when i layered the letters they became lost and illegible, also i found it hard to stay away from doing the obvious so my work could maybe described as being simple and in some case too simple.
Next time i think i will reproduce the letters neater onto the card because they are a bit messy and have marks all over them, so do not look very professional. I also will try and experiment more using different media so to gather a broader range of examples that i can then work from.
